Why I love making my own jewelry

Growing up I used to love making jewelry, especially because it was another opportunity and outlet for me to be creative. While by no means am I an expert in this craft, I've learned some tips along the way from summer classes and also by trial and error that have helped me make beautiful necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. I also found there have been times it's hard to find the right accessory to pair with an outfit or the options available are pricey.

When building the perfect accessory, I love browsing the craft store for beads or pre-made beaded chains that I think would make a great statement piece, then pairing it with a complimenting satin ribbon. So far my favorite type of necklace to make has themed, varying and layered beads that make a whimsical look. It's SO easy to make, and you'll certainly get compliments every time you wear it!

Materials:

  • 3 split rings

  • Bead Landing Bead Head Pins (I chose gold for this necklace)

  • Chain

  • Wire

  • Spool of satin ribbon

  • Lobster clasp

  • Assortment of beads (Choose the color scheme of your choice!)

  • Needle nose pliers

  • Needle

  • Thread

Directions:

Thread the ribbon through the split ring, then loop around another split ring, sewing together to close. Repeat, with one end as a split ring with the other taking wire and wrapping around the lobster clasp with the needle nose pliers, sew shut.

Next, take your chain and use it to attach the two ribbon ends to the split ends. Now the fun part! Use the landing bead head pins to thread your beads on, leaving enough room at the top to loop around a link on the chain. Continue to build the necklace by repeating this step, alternating bead arrangements and placing closely together for a fuller look.

Once you're happy with the amount of beads on the necklace, pair with an adorable outfit and enjoy!
